IRS Individual and Business Accounts and ID.me
The IRS continues to promote the use of online IRS accounts, which are available for both individuals and businesses. Practitioners might want to recommend these accounts to certain clients.
These accounts provide many useful services, such as scheduling tax payments, checking balances due, and viewing/downloading transcripts. However, it is important for prospective users to know that they need to have an ID.me account before they can set up an IRS account.
ID.me is a third-party identity verification system which requires users to submit scans of a government-issued identification (such as a passport) along with other information.
Those who already have an ID.me account will find it very simple to set up an online IRS account, but those without an ID.me account will need to set up an ID.me account first, which can be time-consuming.
